iZotope have announced its new RX Loudness Control plug-in. With RX Loudness Control, video and audio editors will be able to choose the broadcast standard they wish to adhere to from a set of global templates. In faster than real time, RX Loudness Control will automatically analyze the audio and render out a compliant file and an accompanying .CSV-formatted loudness report in just two clicks.

We’re thrilled to offer post and broadcast professionals an automatic loudness correction solution that meets their needs for quality and accuracy. RX Loudness Control will give users absolute confidence in their work, while being easy to use and compatible with most major audio and video-editing platforms.

The intelligent DSP processing inside RX Loudness Control is brand new and has been developed specifically to guarantee transparent loudness correction, and to offer loudness tolerance metering across a range of program types. RX Loudness Control supports mono, stereo, and surround channel counts, up to 5.1, for seamless integration into any workflow.

iZotope have not released any previews of the GUI at the time of the announcement, we can now exclusively reveal what RX Loudness Control will look like. These are the first views of RX Loudness Control to be seen outside of the iZotope development labs.

This is the history tab of the plug-in, which shows where in the program the loudness criteria go out of spec. You can choose which of the key descriptors to display, Momentary, Short Term and Integrated. There is also a Tolerance band to help you see if you are on target. Further down there is a true peak limiter which is an essential part of any loudness correction plug-in because if a program is low on loudness but the True Peak is close to the maximum then if the plug-in just increased the gain to get the Integrated loudness in spec the True Peak would then be too high, so including the true peak limiter from Ozone will mean you can be confident that the true peaks will be taken care of as well.

RX Loudness Control Statistics Tab

This shows the Statistics tab, where you can see all the key loudness descriptors for the analysed clip. Also in the menu bar at the top there is a drop down menu with presets for all the key delivery specs around the world including, as you can see, the new EBU R128 S1 spec for short form content under 1 minute in duration like adverts, promos and tails which adds a maximum momentary or short term loudness criteria to the delivery spec.

Adobe Premiere Export To RX Loudness Control

Because of the way Adobe Premiere handles VST plug-ins, it hasn’t been possible to implement RX Loudness Control in Adobe Premiere. Undeterred, the team at iZotope have built RX Loudness Control in the Export options in Premiere. You can how take your program mix track, export it using the RX Loudness Control preset and then re-import the processed mix track confident that you can now deliver a loudness compliant program straight from Adobe Premiere.

Visitors at NAB 2015 Can See The First Public Presentation Of RX Loudness Control

NAB attendees will be able to see the first public presentation of RX Loudness Control, as well as RX 4 audio repair and enhancement, on the show floor and at the CPUG Las Vegas SuperMeet at the Riviera Hotel Royale Ballroom on Tuesday, April 14 at 7 pm. We hope to be able to bring a sneak peek after NAB so everyone else can see it.

RX Loudness Control Compatibility

RX Loudness Control will support the AudioSuite DPM and AAX plug-in standards for Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools. RX Loudness Control is also going to be integrated into Adobe Premiere Pro’s open extension API, bringing offline loudness-compliant processing to the Adobe platform for the first time ever. RX Loudness Control Pricing & Availability

RX Loudness Control is available for pre-order at NAB 2015 at a special introductory price of $299 (£205 / €279) Once the introductory price finishes then the MSRP will be $349 (€325 / £239), with an expected release in Spring 2015.

Overview

The Loudness module adjusts the gain of the signal in order to meet the specified loudness standard, such as BS.1770. Unlike the Leveler module, the gain in Loudness module stays fixed in time. However a post-limiter will be applied to the signal, if it is required to meet the True peak specification.

Controls

• Loudness standard: Specifies the loudness standard used for calculating loudness and sets Integrated loudness and True peak sliders to the target values typical for the standard. See the Loudness Standard chart below for more information about the different loudness standards.
  
• Integrated loudness: Sets the desired integrated loudness of the clip, in LKFS (which is the same as LUFS).
  
• True peak: Sets the maximum true peak value allowed in a clip.
  

Integrated loudness & True peak level Compatibility Note

• Note that some combinations of Integrated loudness and True peak level may be incompatible.
  
• For example, having loudness of −10 LKFS is not compatible with a true peak value of −20 dBTP.
  
• When settings are incompatible, the Loudness module will display a warning at the end of the processing pass.

To use the Loudness module:
1. Make a selection in your file. If you want to apply Loudness to the entire clip, click Edit > Select All or Edit > Deselect All.
2. Click Process > Loudness.
3. Select a preset, or make adjustments to the Integrated loudness and/or True peak sliders.
4. Click Process.
